Chantesa woke to the sound of a smart rap on the door. The radiator was hissing merrily and the room had gone downright balmy. Condensation rained down the interior of the windows in gold drops. The late morning sun blasted through the window like a spotlight.

Leaping from the bed, she twirled a bathrobe around her shoulders and headed for the door, pressing her eye to the security hole. A light brown coiffure swayed jauntily from the other side.

“Luvissa!” she exclaimed, flinging the door open joyfully. “What are you doing here?”

“Chantesa, you look marvelous!” Luvissa declared, entering the room and glancing around at the simple and somewhat shabby furniture. “Are you in hiding?”

Chantesa looked around too. “Sort of?” she admitted. She gestured to the davenport by the window, clearing the cocktail table of magazines and newspapers before sitting at the other end.

Luvissa picked her way through the clutter and perched at the edge of the sofa as though afraid to sit all the way on it. She held her pocketbook in her lap in both primly white-gloved hands.

“How did you find me?” Chantesa asked, trying to conceal her excitement. Though she was glad for Yvonne’s protection, the long, lonely days had begun to wear on her. She held on to Yvonne’s promise that it was almost over, for real this time. She really preferred to be more of a social animal.

Luvissa shrugged. “Oh, the usual way,” she drawled casually. “The drums told me.”

“Oh,” Chantesa nodded. Luvissa was the only one who had ever really mastered the dreamwalking drum, the runebom. Rose claimed that Luvissa could leave her body and go anywhere, even into another person’s dreams. She could see everyone’s secrets. She could find anything that needed to be found, or lose anything that needed to be lost.

Luvissa looked around, squinting at the narrow two-burner stove and simple sink that comprised the kitchen. “Do you have coffee?” she asked.

Chantesa shifted in her seat. “Well… I could just pop down to the coffee shop and get you some?” she offered. “It’s pretty good, really.”

“No, that’s all right, nevermind,” Luvissa averred, waving her gloved hand in the air.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’ll just get some on my way out,” Luvissa nodded. She crossed her ankles daintily. Her gold brocade suit sparkled faintly in the sunlight.

Chantesa nearly held her breath. She knew Luvissa was here for a reason, but she always made a habit of telling Chantesa how impetuous and childish she was. With a silent prayer, she resolved to be neither and instead adopted a pose of polite alertness.

“You’re probably wondering why I’m here,” Luvissa started.

Chantesa shrugged casually.

“Well,” she started, and then trailed off. She looked around the room again and then sat up straight, a gleam in her eye. “Say,” she said suddenly. “Would you like to go to Las Vegas with me?”

Chantesa gasped. “What?”

“Yes,” Luvissa said, nodding vigorously. “You know, I just thought of it, but it really seems like the right thing to do. Get away from,” she waved her fingers through the dusty air, “all this.
